Vera Sacchetti, “Design as Learning, Learning as Design: Making the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial”
Ninety-nine years after the Bauhaus, the world and design are very different than a century ago; and yet, design education has mostly remained the same. In a time of constant precarity and crisis, is it time to go back to school – and redesign it? Titled “A School of Schools”, the latest edition of the Istanbul Design Biennial aims to start a discussion on design, education and design education, and explores how they can evolve, adapt and respond to our current times. Vera Sacchetti, associate curator of the Biennial (and DCrit alum), will discuss the curatorial team’s key questions and concepts, and expand on the process of making the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial.
Vera Sacchetti is a design critic, co-curator of TEOK Basel, and co-founder of the editorial consultancy Superscript. She serves in a variety of curatorial, research and editorial roles, most recently as associate curator of the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial. She was curatorial advisor for the BIO 50 Biennial of Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia, web editor at Domus, and co-editor of The Adhocracy Reader for the 1st Istanbul Design Biennial. With Superscript, she headed the “Towards a New Avant-Garde” event series at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale. Her writing has appeared in Disegno, Metropolis, and The Avery Review, among other publications. She received an MFA in Design Criticism from SVA in 2011.
