Scalies: Traversing the Render Universe – SVA MA Design Research

Alex Klimoski

Scalies: Traversing the Render Universe

Part of Vital Signs

Ever wonder about the people in the architectural renderings that hang in the windows of real estate offices or on the scaffolding around construction sites? You know, those happy people doing yoga, riding bikes, and pushing strollers? In the architecture world, these people are called “scalies” due to their function as markers of scale and dimension. Yet in reality, scalies end up doing a lot more than just that. This podcast explores the lives of scalies, tracing their use back to the Renaissance while taking a look at their role within the world of contemporary architectural rendering.
