Maura Frana – SVA MA Design Research

Maura is an American designer, educator, and writer currently examining the parallels between verbal and visual language and investigating the influence of such on the understanding and practice of design.

Maura holds an MFA in Communication Design from Pratt Institute. She has taught graphic design full time at the undergraduate and graduate levels since 2013 and is currently a Visiting Artist at School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Maura is the co-author of the book Five Conversations on Graphic Design and Creative Writing, which examines the value of cross-disciplinary methods in graphic design. Her graduate research followed two paths: one investigating the intellectual, poetic, and cognitive needs of users in the digital age; the other exploring Dutch values in design.

She is looking forward to time focused on writing and a shove toward a richer, more active writing practice.
