Michael Johnson is a graphic designer living in Brooklyn. He is the creative director for Happy Cog, a digital design studio spun out of the web standards movement, and has led projects for such clients as Harvard College, Harvard Business School, MTV, and Citi Bike. Curious about the web’s penetration into our national and emergent global visual language, Michael hopes to investigate how the web impacts the cultural fabric of our everyday beyond the mouse and screen (or thumb and phone, nowadays) and why design on the web has escaped formal, critical dissection in the wider design discourse. Originally from rural Virginia, Michael has held onto an appreciation for local tradition and vernacular, contradicting his inclination to grid systems and straight lines. His one-year-old daughter is still the only native New Yorker he’s met.
