4th Annual Phil Patton Lecture: Rob Walker on “The Art of Noticing”

This lecture celebrates the memory of DCrit faculty member Phil Patton, an acclaimed design journalist who revealed the rich and complex stories of everyday objects. Each year, SVA MA Design Research invites a research, writer, or designer who is working in the spirit of Phil: approaching design with boundless curiosity and a critical eye.

Noticing what others have overlooked is at the core of creativity, innovation, design — and design writing. In our era of distraction, it’s also a challenge. Rob Walker discusses his upcoming book, offering ideas, prompts, and provocations to build your attention muscles, and embrace the art of noticing.

 

This talk will be followed by a short Q&A and drinks reception, where you can take the opportunity to chat with our speaker as well as students and faculty of the program. This event free and open to the public, but you must RSVP to attend.

Rob Walker is a journalist covering design, technology, business, the arts, and other subjects. He writes the Human Resource column for Lifehacker, and has contributed to The New York Times, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Atlantic, TheNewYorker.Com, Design Observer, The Organist, and many others. He wrote “The Workologist” column for The New York Times from 2013 to 2018, the “Consumed” column for The New York Times Magazine, where he was a contributing writer from 2004-2012, and created and wrote the “Ad Report Card” column for Slate. He is the author of Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are (2008), Letters From New Orleans (2005), and The Art of Noticing (Knopf), which comes out in May 2019. He is on the faculty of MFA Products of Design and the MA Design Research Summer Intensive program at the School of Visual Arts.
