Avery Trufelman, “Abandon Your Plans” – SVA MA Design Research

Avery Trufelman, “Abandon Your Plans”

Avery Trufelman has been making radio stories about design at 99% Invisible for the past five years. She’s covered everything from garbage trucks in Taipei to swimming pools in Helsinki to art schools in Havana. Last fall, she was the host of Articles of Interest, a six-part series dedicated to clothing and the things we wear. Articles of Interest was named a best podcast of 2018 by the BBC, Curbed, Globe & Mail, LAist, New York Magazine, and the New Yorker.

“Abandon Your Plans” is a tale of radio, kidney-shaped swimming pools, Finnish midcentury design, Thrasher Magazine, and how, when everything seems to fall into chaos, the best stories emerge. Avery will dissect one of her favorite 99% Invisible podcast episodes, “The Pool and the Stream” and go through the step-by-step process of making it.

This lecture is followed by a short Q&A and drinks reception, where you can take the opportunity to chat with our speaker as well as students and faculty of the program. This lecture free and open to the public, but you must RSVP to attend.

Stay tuned for the announcement of our full Spring 2019 speaker list!
