Elizabeth Essner – SVA MA Design Research

Elizabeth Essner is a Brooklyn-based specialist in modern and contemporary design, decorative arts, and craft. An accredited appraiser and independent researcher, she has also been a specialist at Rago Arts and Auction Center in Lambertville, New Jersey, and has worked at design galleries R & Company and Historical Design. Elizabeth received her MA from the Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture.

Whether it’s a piece in a museum or a cup in a cabinet, Elizabeth is an objects person. Understanding how objects are made and who made them—from both a market and design-history perspective—fuels her interest in the field. At the SVA Design Writing and Research Summer Intensive, Elizabeth is really looking forward to thinking critically and writing carefully about makers, their work, and their place in time. When not at work, Elizabeth and her husband are busy being parents to two cute kiddos and one French Bulldog.
