devoted to the study of design, its contexts & consequences.
Our graduates have gone on to pursue research-related careers in publishing, education, museums, institutes, design practice, entrepreneurship, & more.3

Kimberlie Birks – SVA MA Design Research

Kimberlie’s writing has been featured on and appeared in publications such as Dwell, DomusMetropolis and Vogue. Her first book, Design for Children, published by Phaidon in 2018, is a comprehensive survey of children’s products and furniture design from Bauhaus to today. She is also a founding partner of Creative States, a platform for a community of artists, designers, thought-leaders and engaged citizens shaping futures we want to live into. Kimberlie holds a degree in art history from Brown University, a certificate in art curation from the Sotheby’s Institute, and a masters in design criticism from the School of Visual Arts, where she wrote a graduate thesis on playground design.
